Kabila joins the ecosystem-wide initiative founded by Algorand Foundation, Cardano Developer Input | Output, Hashgraph, Ripple and XRPL Labs to bolster security and trust in the Web3 and crypto industries

30 January 2025 The Decentralized Recovery (“DeRec”) Alliance, a community-driven organization focused on the creation and maintenance of an open industry-standard protocol that enables the decentralized protection and recovery of blockchain credentials and other important secrets, today announced that Kabila, the all-in-one NFT platform to create, launch, and manage tokenized communities, has joined as a general alliance member.

“At Kabila, our mission is to empower creators by giving them full control and ownership of their communities. Securely managing NFT and token keys is a fundamental part of that vision,“ said Kabila CEO Manu Cabrera. “By joining the DeRec Alliance, we’re not only integrating the DeRec Protocol into Kabila Wallet for secure account key management but also ensuring that creators have a safer and more seamless way to manage their token keys. These keys are critical for maintaining access and ownership of their most valuable asset: their direct connection with their communities.”

“The DeRec Protocol reduces the friction associated with private key management, which is quite important for users who are not familiar with decentralized apps (DApps)” added Rafael Luján, Kabila CIO and software architect. “It enables account recovery without compromising security, and its ability to serve as an interoperable standard across applications results in more intuitive and reliable workflows.”

Public distributed ledger technologies (DLT) such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are decentralized technologies that operate without the oversight of a central organization that can restore lost, stolen, or misplaced end-user credentials. With no user-friendly industry standard approach to protecting these secrets, DLT users are therefore on their own when it comes to safeguarding their digital assets, accounts, keys, and passwords. Over the last decade, thousands of web3 users have been locked out of their accounts causing the collective loss of billions of dollars while hastening adoption of one of the world’s most revolutionary technologies.

In the spirit of lowering that barrier to adoption while at the same time offering an industry standard means for Web3 users to protect their existing secrets from irrecoverable loss, Hedera Co-Founder Dr. Leemon Baird, along with leaders from the Algorand, Cardano, Hedera, and Ripple ecosystems founded the  501(c)(3) not-for-profit DeRec Alliance and its namesake protocol to simplify and secure digital asset recovery. DeRec provides solutions for protecting various types of data, including keys for any blockchain or ledger, passwords, photos, notes, identity credentials, and cryptographic keys. By addressing the intricate technical challenges hindering web3 adoption, the DeRec Alliance aims to unite leading organizations in creating user-friendly, accessible experiences for everyone.

We’re very happy to welcome Kabila as the newest member of the DeRec Alliance,” said Dr. Baird. “Far too many Web3 users have needlessly lost access to their blockchain accounts and other important secrets. As more members like Kabila join the Alliance in support of the DeRec protocol, it’s a clear sign of how forward-thinking Web3 solution providers are prioritizing end-user and community safety.

“We are delighted to have Kabila join the DeRec Alliance and look forward to their contributions as we pursue the widespread adoption of our open-source, industry-standard protocol for decentralised recovery,” said John Woods, CTO of the Algorand Foundation.

About The Decentralized Recovery Protocol

The Decentralized Recovery (DeRec) open-source protocol is a standard approach to secret management, based on secret sharing among a set of helpers (e.g., friends or businesses), who can assist the user in recovering their secret when needed. Each helper’s share by itself reveals no information about the original secret, and half the helpers can give the user their shares to reconstruct the secret, even when a user has lost their phone or other two-factor recovery device. The protocol includes automatic regular confirmations that helpers still have shares of secrets, and automatic re-sharing when secrets change or helpers join or leave. The user never reveals who the helpers are, nor even how many helpers there are, and even the helpers won’t know that.

About The DeRec Alliance

The DeRec Alliance is a group of forward-thinking companies from across the Web2 and Web3 ecosystems that are committed to making the process of securing and recovering digital assets, accounts, and other secrets as simple as existing Web2 experiences. Leveraging a new open source standard, these organizations are working together to help their users and the broader world realize the promise of Web3, without the complexity.
